Discover La Choza Del Viejo (The Best Chinese Food)

If you’re craving bold flavors and generous portions, La Choza Del Viejo (The Best Chinese Food) at 5415b Monona Dr, Monona, WI 53716, United States, deserves a serious spot on your radar. I’ve eaten my way through plenty of Chinese restaurants across Wisconsin-from quick takeout counters to upscale dining rooms-and this cozy diner-style spot in Monona genuinely surprised me. The first time I walked in, the aroma of garlic, soy sauce, and sizzling wok-fired vegetables instantly told me this kitchen means business.

The menu is packed with familiar favorites-General Tso’s chicken, beef with broccoli, sweet and sour pork-but what stands out is how balanced everything tastes. According to the National Restaurant Association, Asian cuisine consistently ranks among the top five most ordered takeout categories in the U.S., and it’s easy to see why when you try dishes done right. Here, the fried rice isn’t greasy; instead, each grain stays separate, lightly coated with egg and scallions. The lo mein noodles have that slightly chewy texture that comes from proper wok cooking, not from sitting under a heat lamp.

On my last visit, I ordered the orange chicken and shrimp fried rice. The chicken had that perfect crispy coating without being heavy, and the sauce struck the ideal balance between citrusy sweetness and subtle heat. That balance matters. Food scientists often explain that our taste buds respond best when sweet, salty, sour, and umami are harmonized. The kitchen at La Choza Del Viejo clearly understands that principle. The shrimp in the fried rice were plump and fresh-tasting, not rubbery-something that often happens when seafood is overcooked.

Service is fast but friendly. During a busy Friday evening, I noticed how efficiently the staff handled both dine-in guests and takeout orders. Orders moved quickly from stovetop to table, which tells me their workflow is tight. In Chinese cooking, especially stir-fry, timing is everything. Ingredients are prepped in advance, sauces measured, and the wok heated until almost smoking before anything hits the pan. That process locks in flavor and texture. You can taste that care in every bite.

Reviews from locals consistently praise the generous portions and reasonable pricing. In fact, a couple sitting next to me mentioned they always split one entrée and still leave with leftovers. That’s been my experience too. For families or students in Monona, value matters, and this place delivers without cutting corners on ingredients.

The dining area itself feels casual and welcoming. It’s not flashy, but it’s clean and comfortable, which builds trust. Health and safety standards are a big part of restaurant credibility; organizations like the CDC emphasize proper food handling and kitchen sanitation as key to preventing foodborne illness. While I can’t see every detail behind the scenes, the visible cleanliness of the space and the freshness of the dishes inspire confidence.

What also makes La Choza Del Viejo stand out is consistency. I’ve visited three times over the past few months, ordering different items each time-kung pao chicken, vegetable stir-fry, and egg drop soup. The flavors were steady across visits. Consistency is often what separates a good Chinese diner from a great one. When a restaurant can maintain the same quality during both slow afternoons and packed dinner rushes, that’s a strong sign of solid kitchen management.

If you’re exploring restaurants in Monona and want dependable takeout or a relaxed dine-in experience, this location on Monona Drive is easy to access and convenient for a quick lunch break or dinner after work. Whether you’re a fan of spicy Szechuan-style dishes or milder Cantonese-inspired plates, the menu covers a wide range of classic Chinese cuisine.

There may be more upscale spots in larger cities, but sometimes what you really want is flavorful comfort food served hot and fresh. Based on my experience-and the steady stream of repeat customers walking through the door-La Choza Del Viejo has earned its reputation as a go-to destination for satisfying Chinese food in Monona.

  • Pretty good food overall. You can tell that they use fresher ingredients than your average Chinese place. The fried items like egg rolls and crab Rangoon were really well done. The fried rice was only ok. The staff were very friendly and the food was hot and made very quickly.

  • Just follow the reviews! Living in McFarland - our go to was always Main Moon. But, I could not resist trying this place out, mostly because of the reviews! Great customer experience ordering on- line, super easy. Food was waiting for me when I walked into the restaurant! Food was hot, not greasy- EGG Rolls were super good. General Tsoa Chicken was spicy (Ordered the Normal), Generous portions. Not that out of the way from McFarland - will definitely order from here again!

  • I have been to La Choza twice now for lunch and it was wonderful both times. I took the items to go and both times the food was piping hot when I got back to work. First time I had the Orange Chicken lunch with crab rangoon. The second was General Tsos chicken lunch with crab rangoon. Similar dish but the orange is sweeter and the general tsos was spicier. I will continue to go back and try items as they are friendly and the food was consistently good.

  • It really is the best. Veggie spring roll is hand rolled. The fried rice has that brown tint. The broccoli had that wok char flavor. The delivery packing was so thoughtful too. Another Monona Drive gem.

  • Didn’t feel like cooking so I got the general Tsos meal with fried rice and crab rangoons. The rangoons are what you’d expect and the fried rice was a little bland but holy cats is the general Tsos chicken good. Still a little crispy even though it was super saucy. Decent amount of heat too which is a nice surprise. For the price it’s perfect, I’ll be back.
